Proportions that are right
The flag here follows the federal specification: the fly is 1.9 times the hoist, each of the thirteen stripes is one thirteenth of the hoist, and the blue union is seven stripes tall and two fifths of the fly wide. The fifty stars sit in nine rows, six in the odd rows and five in the even rows, and each star is 0.0616 of the hoist across.
That makes the stars small. On a flag 100 mm wide each stripe is about 4 mm tall and each star about 3.2 mm across, which is too fine for most vinyl. Cut the full flag at 200 mm wide or more, where the stars are about 6.5 mm, or use the Betsy Ross flag, the heart or the circle, which have larger stars.
One colour or three
The one-colour files hold only the dark parts: the union and the seven red stripes. Cut them in navy, black or white and let the shirt, the wood or the glass show through as the white stripes and stars. The union and the four short stripes beside it are welded, so they stay lined up; the three long stripes are separate bars, except on the pole, rod, heart and circle designs, which are single pieces.
The layered files have a red layer, a white layer and a blue layer. The white layer runs behind the union, so the stars show white without fifty tiny pieces to place.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How are the fifty stars arranged?
In nine rows that alternate between six stars and five, starting and ending with a row of six. Seen the other way there are eleven columns that alternate between five stars and four. Every star has one point straight up.
Which way round does a vertical flag hang?
With the union at the top and on the left as you look at it. The vertical design here is drawn that way, with the stars turned upright, so it reads correctly on a door banner or a porch sign.
How do I weed the distressed flag?
Slowly, and at a good size. The flakes and scratches are small holes, so cut the distressed flag at 250 mm wide or more and weed from the union outwards. On wood or a shirt a few lost crumbs will not show, because the wear is random in the first place.
