Free starfish SVG files

Free starfish SVG files: a classic spotted starfish, a plain silhouette, an outline, a knobbly cushion star, a wavy-armed brittle star, geometric and mandala versions, a monogram starfish and a wreath. The regular ones have exact five-fold symmetry, because the arms are turned by code.

Sizes, spots and what a starfish is good for

A starfish is one of the safest shapes to cut: five broad arms with blunt tips and nothing that sticks out thinly. Each file is 100 mm across at its own size. The plain silhouette cuts cleanly at any size, down to confetti of 15 mm, and in any material from vinyl to 6 mm plywood.

The spotted, knobbly and monogram starfish have round holes down each arm. At 100 mm across the smallest spots are about 2 mm wide, so cut those designs at 80 mm or more in vinyl and card, and weed the spots with a pin. The mandala starfish has the finest detail and wants 120 mm or more.

The brittle starfish is the exception to the sturdy rule: its arms are long and thin, about 7 mm at the disc and under 3 mm at the tip. Keep it for vinyl, card and iron-on, or cut it large in wood.

Starfish for weddings and beach houses

For a beach wedding, cut the silhouette in pearl or kraft card at 40 to 60 mm for place cards and favour tags, and the wreath at 150 mm for a welcome sign. For a bathroom or a beach house, the three loose starfish scale well: cut them in three sizes from the same sheet and let them drift across a wall or a mirror.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a starfish look three-dimensional?

Use the starfish with ridged arms. Set the five centre lines to score instead of cut, then pinch each arm along its line so the middle stands up. In card of 200 gsm or more it holds the fold and looks like a dried starfish.

Which starfish can I hang as an ornament or a pendant?

The monogram starfish has a round window at its centre that takes a ribbon, a cord or an initial. For a plain one, add a 3 mm hole near the tip of one arm of the silhouette in your cutting software before you cut.

Do starfish always have five arms?

Most common starfish do, and every design here has five. The regular designs repeat one arm exactly five times about the centre, so they stay balanced however you turn them. The silhouette and the three loose starfish have each arm bent differently, for a natural look.
