Bottles that hold together

A bottle of polish is two blocks, glass and cap, joined by a neck only about 15 mm wide when the bottle is 100 mm tall. The line under the cap is a slot that stops short of both sides, which leaves a bridge about 2 mm wide at each side of the neck, and the highlights on the glass and the handle are slots about 2.5 mm wide. That makes the bottles safe in vinyl, card and thin plywood. On the open bottle the strand of polish between the brush and the neck is under 2 mm wide at its thinnest, so cut that one at 120 mm or more and lift it from the glass end.

The hand comes two ways. In the single-colour hand the nails are openings about 5 mm wide when the hand is 100 mm tall, with a rim of about 1.5 mm round each, so cut it at 100 mm or more and back it with a colour. In the layered hand the nails are separate almond shapes about 7 mm wide that sit on the fingertips, which is large enough to place by eye.

Decals and stencils for real nails

The decal sheet, the stencil sheet and the chart of nail shapes are drawn large so that you can see them, and are meant to be scaled down. A fingernail is 8 to 14 mm wide, so shrink the decal sheet until each shape is 5 to 8 mm across and cut it from thin permanent vinyl with a fresh blade at low pressure. For the stencil, use low-tack or stencil vinyl, press it onto a fully dry base coat, paint over the opening and peel it away while the polish is still wet. Seal either with a top coat.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How small can I cut the nail decals?

Most hobby cutters manage the heart, star, moon, drop and ring at 5 mm. The daisy, the bow and the crown have finer points and are better at 7 to 8 mm. Use thin vinyl, a new blade and a slow speed, and weed with tweezers under a lamp.

Can I change the colour of the layered bottle?

Yes. The bottom layer is the whole bottle and stands for the polish, so cut it from any colour or from glitter vinyl. Keep the cap dark or metallic and the highlight white, and leave off the heart label if you want a plain bottle.

Which design suits a nail technician’s logo or price list?

The nail tech badge with the crossed file and brush is drawn for that, and the manicure set makes a good header. Both are single pieces. For a small mark in a corner, the plain bottle or the monogram frame with your initial reads better at 20 to 30 mm.
