A long, low drawing
A tractor and trailer is more than twice as long as it is tall, so at 100 mm long the rig is only about 41 mm high and everything on it is small. The wheels are about 10 mm across with a 4 mm hub hole, the exhaust stack is a little over 2 mm wide, and the ribs on the trailer and the door lines are cuts a little under 1.5 mm wide. In vinyl that works well from about 120 mm long, which suits a toolbox, a cooler or the side of a toy chest. For a shirt, 200 to 250 mm long is usual.
If you need it small, use the silhouette: it has only the two cab windows cut out and stands on a strip of road, so it is also the one to cut from card or wood for a shadow box. The cab from the front and the trucker at the window are closer to square and can be cut smaller than the side views.
Trailers and tractors
Every trailer couples to the same tractor: a box trailer, a tanker with three hatches, a flatbed with strapped timber and a tipping trailer in the middle of unloading. The cab-over freight truck has the flat-fronted tractor that is common outside North America, and faces the other way. None of the trucks copies a real make: the grille is a row of plain bars and the cab shapes are generic, so you can add the name of your own company to the trailer.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I put a name on the semi truck trailer?
Use the semi truck with a blank trailer. The trailer is an open frame about 55 mm long and 28 mm tall inside when the design is 100 mm long. Type the name in your cutting software, fit it inside the frame and cut it from a second colour, or weld it to the frame for one piece.
Is the semi truck based on a real make?
No. The long-nosed tractor and the cab-over are both generic, drawn for this library with no badge, no maker’s grille and no trademarked cab lines. That keeps them safe to use on things you sell.
Why does the side view show five wheels?
An eighteen wheeler has five axles: one at the front with two wheels, and four more with four wheels each, two under the tractor and two under the trailer. From the side you see one wheel for each axle, which is five.
