Steam, smoke and spokes
A steam engine is mostly fine detail: spokes, rods, rails and smoke. On the steam train engine the spokes of the driving wheels are about 1.8 mm wide and the coupling rod a little under 3 mm when the engine is 100 mm long. That cuts well in vinyl and card at 100 mm and above. For anything smaller, or for wood, use the simple train engine for children or the train silhouette, where the wheels are solid.
The smoke is a row of round puffs that overlap one another all the way back to the chimney. It is part of the engine, so there are no loose clouds to place afterwards. If you would rather have the engine without smoke, delete the puffs in your cutting software: they come away cleanly at the top of the chimney.
Names, ages and long trains
The train with three blank wagons is made for a child’s name or age: each wagon is an empty frame for one letter or number. Cut the wagons again to make a longer train. The train tracks from above are drawn so that copies butt end to end, and the circle of track makes a round frame for a birthday number or a monogram.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I spell a longer name with the blank wagons?
Each wagon is the same, with a coupling at its front end. Copy the last wagon in your cutting software, move the copy back by one wagon length so its coupling overlaps the wagon in front, and weld. Add as many as the name needs, then put one letter in each.
Which train suits a second or third birthday?
The simple train engine for children. It is made of a few big rounded shapes, with cross-spoked wheels and three puffs of smoke, and it stays clear at 60 mm wide. For the age, use the train with three blank wagons and put the number in the first one.
Is the crossing sign meant to be blank?
Yes. A real crossing sign has words on its two boards, and the wording differs from country to country. The boards here are left empty so you can add your own, or a child’s name, in your cutting software. Each board is about 9 mm tall when the sign is 100 mm tall.
