Blank keys in real proportions
The compact board and the full-size layout follow the unit sizes that nearly every keyboard shares: ordinary keys are one unit wide, the keys at the ends of the rows are one and a quarter to two and three quarter units, and the space bar is six and a quarter. That means the openings line up with a real board if you scale the file to fit. A full-size keyboard is about 440 mm wide, so the 100 mm file needs enlarging a little over four times to match one.
At 100 mm wide the keys are small. On the compact board each ordinary key is an opening about 4.4 mm square with a little under 2 mm of plate between keys. On the full-size layout the openings are about 2.5 mm and the plate between them about 1.7 mm. Cut the compact board at 150 mm or more in vinyl, and the full-size layout at 250 mm or more. For anything smaller use the keyboard icon, whose keys are about 7.6 mm wide.
Keycaps, piano keys and the typewriter
The single keycap has a blank face about 68 mm wide at full size, which takes one letter or a short word in a second colour. The piano keyboards are drawn with the black keys solid and the white keys open, so on a light surface they read the right way round with one colour of vinyl. The typewriter has round keys about 5 mm across at full size, so cut it at 120 mm or more, or use its silhouette.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Why are there no letters on the keys?
So that the files work for every layout and language, and so that the keys stay large enough to cut. Letters on a 4 mm key would be under 2 mm tall. If you want legends, add them in your cutting software on the single keycap or the three-key shortcut, where there is room.
Can I use the layout to make stickers for my own keyboard?
Yes, as a guide. Scale the compact or full-size file until one ordinary key matches the spacing of your keys, usually 19 mm from the middle of one key to the middle of the next, then use the openings as a template for where each sticker goes.
Which notes does the piano keyboard show?
Ten white keys from C up to the E of the next octave, with black keys in their groups of two and three. The wave has fourteen white keys, two full octaves from C. The pattern of black keys is correct in all three piano designs.
