Sizes, materials and what to watch when cutting a pug
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The part to look after on the side views is the tail. It is drawn as a ring standing on the hip, about 6 mm wide at full size with a hole about 8 mm across in the middle. In vinyl, weed that small disc first so it does not lift the ring with it. In 3 mm plywood keep a standing or sitting pug at 100 mm or more so the ring stays strong where it meets the back.
There are two faces because there are two pugs. The fawn pug face is mostly windows: the pale coat is cut away and the ears, the mask, the eyes and the brow wrinkles stay as solid bars about 2.7 mm wide, so cut it at 90 mm or wider and put cream or tan card behind it. The black pug face is the opposite, a solid head with the features as slits about 2 mm wide, and it suits a single colour of vinyl on a pale mug or shirt.
Which pug for which job
The two faces and the Christmas pug fill a square and suit shirts, jumpers and cards. The sitting silhouette is the easiest to cut small, down to about 35 mm for stickers. The head in side view on its collar is a badge shape for treat jars and lead hooks. The paw print is five loose pads, so use transfer tape in vinyl or a backing sheet in card.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which face should I use for a fawn pug and which for a black one?
For a fawn or apricot pug use the pug face, cut from black or dark brown and mounted on fawn card, or the layered fawn pug face in three colours. For a black pug use the black pug face in one colour: its eyes and wrinkles are cut through, so the surface behind shows as fine pale lines.
Will the curled tail survive weeding?
Yes, if you take the middle out first. Lift the small disc inside the curl with a pin before you pull the waste from around the dog, and hold the ring down with a fingertip as you peel past it. At 100 mm the ring is about 6 mm wide, which is plenty for vinyl and card.
Can I take the Santa hat off the Christmas pug?
Use the black pug face instead: it is the same head without the hat. If you would rather keep the hat as a separate piece, open the Christmas pug in your cutting software, ungroup it and cut along the fur band, then cut the hat again in red and white.
