Teeth, claws and tails: cutting dinosaurs

Each file is 100 mm on its longer side at its own size. Dinosaurs are solid, heavy shapes, so most of them cut well small. The fine parts are the T. rex’s teeth, about 2.5 mm tall, its arms, about 3 mm thick, the claws on every foot and the tip of every tail. Those are points and short stubs, not long thin necks, so they survive in vinyl and card down to about 70 mm. The stripes and spots are cuts about 1.5 mm wide.

For felt, foam, thin plywood and anything for small hands, use the dinosaur silhouette, the cute dinosaur or the footprint, which have nothing sharp or thin. On a laser the stegosaurus plates and the triceratops horns are safe at 100 mm in 3 mm plywood; the raptor’s arms want 150 mm.

The footprints scale to anything. A trail across a floor works at 120 to 200 mm a print in removable vinyl. For cupcake toppers cut the set of four at about 60 mm a dinosaur from card of 250 gsm or more and glue each to a cocktail stick.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make a dinosaur footprint trail for a party?

Use the single dinosaur footprint. Cut ten or more from removable vinyl or coloured paper at about 150 mm tall, half of them mirrored, and lay them out left and right by turns about one stride apart, from the front door to the party table. The ready-made trail of five shows the spacing.

Which dinosaur is which?

The T. rex and the raptor walk on two legs and have teeth and claws. The long-neck is a sauropod of the brontosaurus kind. The triceratops has three horns and a frill. The stegosaurus has plates on its back and spikes on its tail. The cute dinosaur and the baby in the egg are young long-necks.

Can I cut the T. rex without the stripes?

Yes. The stripes are separate cuts inside the body. Delete them in your cutting software, or leave them unweeded, and you have a plain T. rex with only its eye and nostril. The T. rex silhouette has no inside cuts at all.
