Sizes that fit the case
A wrapper is not a strip. A cupcake case is wider at the top than at the base, so the band that goes round it is a slice of a ring: its lower edge is as long as the base is round and its upper edge as long as the rim. The standard wrappers here are drawn for a case 51 mm across the base, which is the usual 2 inch case with a little room, and open to 76 mm at the rim. Each note gives the width to cut the file at; the scalloped wrapper is cut 229 mm wide and its sheet is then 93 mm tall, so two fit on one sheet of A4 or Letter card.
The files open at 100 mm on their longer side like the rest of the library, so scale them before cutting. The mini wrapper is cut 152 mm wide for a case 32 mm across the base, and the tall collar 252 mm wide, which fits A4 or Letter card. If your cases are another size, measure across the base of one, divide by 51, and multiply the cut width of a standard wrapper by the answer.
Closing and card
Most of these close without glue. Curl the wrapper, bend the two barbs of the arrow back a little, push the arrow through the slit from the outside and let the barbs open behind it. The slit sits exactly where the band has gone once round the case, so the pattern along the top meets itself at the join. The plain, cross and star wrappers have a glue tab instead: glue it behind the other end, with the end of the band laid along the line where the tab begins.
Card of 160 to 220 gsm is right. It curls round the case without creasing and stands up on its own; thicker card fights the curve and springs the arrow out of its slit. Wrap the cakes once they are baked and cool, since a wrapper is for the table and not the oven, and keep pearlescent or foil card away from wet icing.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What size do I cut a cupcake wrapper?
For a standard case, cut the scalloped wrapper 229 mm wide: it is then 51 mm across the base when closed and stands 51 mm up the side of the case. For a mini case, cut the mini wrapper 152 mm wide. Cut at the 100 mm a file opens at, a wrapper is far too small.
Why is the wrapper curved and not straight?
Because the case is a cone, not a tube. A straight strip wrapped round a case stands away from it at the base or buckles at the top. The curve here is worked out from the width of the base and the rim, so the band lies flat against the case all the way round.
How does the stand tier go together?
Roll the strip into a drum and glue its end tab inside. Fold all the teeth inwards, glue the top ring of teeth under the scalloped plate and the bottom ring on to the round base. Cut 198 mm wide, the sheet is 171 mm tall and fits A4 or Letter card; the plate is 104 mm across, enough for one wrapped cupcake.
