Legs, pincers and how small you can cut a scorpion

A scorpion is the opposite of a bear: nearly all of it is thin. Eight legs, two arms, four pincer fingers and a sting all stand clear of the body, and they set the smallest size you can cut. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. On the scorpion from above the legs taper from about 3 mm at the body to about 1.5 mm at the tip and the pincer fingers end in rounded points. In vinyl that is fine down to about 70 mm if you weed slowly from the body outwards. In card, cut at 100 mm or larger. For wood and acrylic use the scorpion silhouette from the side at 120 mm or more, where the legs are short and stand on the ground, or the scorpion in a ring, where the frame supports every limb.

The pincer fingers and the sting end in fine points. Points do not weaken a vinyl cut, but they lift easily, so burnish the transfer tape well before you peel.

Which scorpion for which job

The scorpion from above is the classic for car windows, toolboxes and desert souvenirs. The straight-tailed scorpion is exactly symmetrical and suits the centre of a shirt back. The two scorpions face to face make a border, and the scorpion tail and stinger sits well behind a name. For a November birthday, put a date inside the scorpion monogram frame.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How many legs should a scorpion have?

Eight walking legs, four on each side, plus two arms that end in pincers. The arms are not legs. Every scorpion here seen from above has all eight legs and both arms. The side views show the four legs and the two pincers of the near side.

Which scorpion can I cut from wood?

The scorpion in a ring is the safest, because the frame holds the legs, the pincers and the tail. The scorpion silhouette from the side also works at 120 mm or more. Leave the scorpion from above for vinyl and card.

Can I use a scorpion for a Scorpio birthday?

Yes. Scorpio runs from late October to late November. Use the scorpion monogram frame with a date or an initial inside the ring, or the scorpion in a ring as a badge on a card or a cake topper.
