What makes it a snowboard
From above, a snowboard is easy to mistake for a skateboard deck or a short surfboard. What sets it apart is the waist, the two round ends of the same size and above all the bindings: two sets of straps across the board, turned outwards like duck feet. Here each binding is cut as a curved highback and two straps, and its ratchets stand a little proud of the edge, so the edge of the board is never quite smooth.
The board is about 25 mm wide when it is 100 mm long, and the strap cuts are just under 2 mm wide. That works in vinyl from about 90 mm long. For a small decal, on a helmet or a water bottle, use the snowboard planted in a snowdrift, which has only the binding cuts inside it, or the snowboard name sign.
Riders, skiers and slopes
The snowboarder and the skier are drawn tipped to a slope of 16 degrees. On the silhouette and the skier the hill is part of the design and is flat underneath, so the piece stands on its own in a shadow box or along the bottom of a card. The rider in the air has no ground at all: hang it above a row of mountains. Arms and legs are 5 to 9 mm thick at 100 mm, and the ski pole, at a little over 2 mm, is the only fine part.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which snowboard design is best for a shirt?
The snowboarding rider with spray. It is one piece with only three small openings, so it weeds quickly in heat transfer vinyl, and it reads well at 200 to 250 mm across the chest. For a left-chest mark, the two crossed snowboards work at 80 mm.
Can I add a name to the snowboard?
Yes, use the snowboard name sign. The clear part of the deck is about 55 mm long and 20 mm tall when the board is 100 mm long. Type the name in your cutting software and cut it out of the deck, or cut it from a second colour and lay it on.
Is there a ski design as well?
Three: a skier running downhill, a pair of crossed skis with poles, and a pair of crossed ski poles. The shafts of the poles are a little over 2 mm wide at 100 mm, so cut those two at 150 mm or more in card or wood.
