Sizes, materials and the feathering of a golden retriever
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. A golden retriever is known by its coat, so the side views carry feathering wherever it grows on the dog: locks on the chest, a fringe under the belly, trousers behind the thighs and a plume under the tail. Each lock ends in a point. In vinyl, weed from the body outwards so you pull along the locks and not against them, and press the tips down before you lift the transfer tape. On a laser the points char first, so lower the power a little or cut the standing silhouette at 120 mm or wider.
The sitting golden retriever keeps its tail on the ground as one smooth brush and has the fewest fine points, which makes it the better choice for 3 mm plywood and for small stickers. The faces have the eyes, brows, nose and open mouth cut through, with the tongue left as a round tab inside the mouth. Cut a face in a dark colour and put it on gold, cream or kraft card so the features show pale.
Which golden retriever for which job
The standing silhouette is cut level under the feet, so it sits flush on the floor of a shadow box or along the bottom edge of a sign. The mum and pup suits Mother’s Day cards and shirts. The bone under the sitting dog is a blank name plate. The paw print badge is five loose pieces, so use transfer tape in vinyl or a backing sheet in card, and the monogram frame leaves the top of the ring clear for an initial.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make the coat golden?
For one colour, cut any of the solid designs from gold, tan or copper vinyl: the shape does the rest. For more depth use the layered golden retriever face: a golden head, deeper gold ears, a cream muzzle, dark features and a pink tongue, stacked in that order. A cream or pale gold head with tan ears gives an English cream golden.
Will the feathered tail survive cutting and weeding?
Yes, at a sensible size. The locks under the tail are joined to it along their whole base, so nothing hangs by a thread. Keep the standing dog at 80 mm or wider in vinyl and 120 mm or wider in wood, and weed along the tail from its root to its tip.
Can I use these for a Labrador?
Not really: the feathered chest, trousers and tail are what mark these out as a golden retriever, and a Labrador has a short, smooth coat and a thick, round tail. The face is the closest match if you only need a head.
