Free jellyfish SVG files

Free jellyfish SVG files: a classic jellyfish with frilled arms, a drifting silhouette, a swimmer, a smiling one for children, a mandala, three drifting together, a long-tentacled one for tall spaces and a moon jellyfish from above. Every tentacle is welded to the bell.

Tentacles that hold together

A jellyfish is a bell and a lot of thin trailing parts, and the thin parts are what make it awkward to cut. Here every tentacle is a ribbon, not a hairline, and each one is welded to the rim of the bell, so the whole animal lifts as one piece. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. On the classic jellyfish the tentacles are about 2.6 mm wide and the frilled arms pinch to about the same, which is fine for vinyl and card at that size. For 3 mm plywood or acrylic cut it at 160 mm or more, or use the cute jellyfish, whose tentacles are about 7 mm thick.

In vinyl, weed from the bell downwards and pull each tentacle along its length. Use plenty of transfer tape and press the tentacles down before you lift, as they like to stay on the backing. A card jellyfish is lovely hung as a mobile: thread it through the top of the bell and let the tentacles curl.

Colour and glow

Jellyfish suit colours you would not use on other animals: violet, pink, turquoise and holographic vinyl all look right, and glow-in-the-dark vinyl makes sense here in a way it rarely does. The ribs and the rim line on the bell are holes, so a second colour behind the bell shows through them. The layered jellyfish separates the bell from the tentacles for two-tone cuts.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Will the thin tentacles survive weeding?

At 100 mm tall, yes: on the single jellyfish the thinnest tentacle is over 2 mm wide and none of them is loose. Below about 70 mm they become fiddly in vinyl, so for small decals choose the cute jellyfish or the moon jellyfish from above, which has no tentacles at all.

Which jellyfish fits a tumbler or a bookmark?

The jellyfish with long tentacles. It is about 36 mm wide when it is 100 mm tall, so it runs up the side of a tumbler or down a bookmark without wrapping. Cut it at 150 to 200 mm for a full-height tumbler decal.

How do I use the jellyfish monogram frame?

The bell is an open arch about 54 mm wide inside when the design is 100 mm tall. Type an initial, scale it until it overlaps the arch at the top and at both sides, and weld the two so the letter cuts as part of the bell.
