Sizes, materials and the fine parts of a fox

Every fox here is 100 mm on its longer side. A fox is a slim animal, so the side views have fine legs: about 4.5 mm wide at the ankle on the fox silhouette, and the rim round each tail tip window is between 2 and 3 mm. Vinyl and card cope with that down to about 60 mm long. In 3 mm plywood keep a standing fox at 100 mm or more, or choose the sitting fox or the fox curled up asleep, which have no thin legs to snap.

The white parts of a fox are what make it a fox: the tip of the brush, the cheeks and the chest. In these files they are windows cut through the shape, so a sheet of white or cream card behind the cut piece finishes the animal in two colours without a second cut. On dark vinyl applied to a pale wall or mug, the surface does the same job.

Which fox for which job

The fox head and the cute fox face are exactly symmetrical and fill a square, which suits shirts, tote bags and round signs. The geometric fox head is a line drawing for foil quills, engraving and pen plotters. The fox tail is long and narrow with room to punch a hole at the root, so it works as a key ring or an earring cut from faux leather.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I make the fox orange and white?

Cut the fox once from orange card or vinyl and put white behind it. The tail tip, cheeks and bib are already cut out as windows, so the white shows through in the right places. For iron-on, press a white patch first and the orange fox on top.

Which fox is easiest to weed?

The fox silhouette and the leaping fox silhouette have no inside cuts at all. The sitting fox has three: an eye, an inner ear and the tail tip. Leave the mandala fox head for when you have a sharp blade and a full-size cut, because its windows are small.

Can I cut the geometric fox head from vinyl?

Yes, but it is all line, about 2.3 mm wide at 100 mm, so cut it at 120 mm or larger and use strong transfer tape. It is more at home as a foil or engraved design, or cut from card and mounted on a contrasting backing.
