How a door stays in its frame

In a single-colour file a door and its frame are the same piece of material, so the only way to show where one ends and the other begins is a cut. Here that cut runs up one side of the door, over the top and down the other, and stops at the threshold. The door stays joined along its bottom edge, so it cannot drop out, and on thin card you can even fold it open along that edge.

Panels and panes are openings, with the stiles, rails and glazing bars left standing between them. Those bars are about 2.5 to 3.5 mm wide when the door is 100 mm tall. The French doors have the most of them, twenty-four panes in all, and are best cut at 120 mm or taller; the door silhouette and the door hanger blank have nothing fine at all.

House signs, cards and little scenes

Doors turn up on new home cards, estate agent gifts, advent calendars and fairy gardens. The arched doorway frame is open for a house number or a family name. The Christmas door has its wreath and bow cut into the leaf, so it shows in the colour of the backing; the layered red front door does the same thing in eight flat colours. Every door stands on a flat step for gluing into a paper scene.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Can the doors be made to open?

On card, yes. The cut round the door leaves it joined along the bottom, which is not where a real door hinges, so for a door that swings sideways cut along the threshold with a craft knife and score down one side instead. The open door design shows a door already ajar.

How do I use the door hanger blank?

Cut it from card, thin wood or acrylic at 200 to 250 mm tall, which makes the hole about 45 to 55 mm across, enough for most door handles. The slot lets it slide over the handle. Add your wording inside the four corner cuts.

Which door is best for a house number sign?

The arched doorway frame. Its opening is about 48 mm wide and 85 mm tall when the frame is 100 mm tall, so a two or three figure number fits comfortably. Weld the number to the arch where it touches, or mount it on a backing.
