Slats that stay in one piece
A park bench is a row of slats, and slats that were cut right through would fall apart. Here the gaps between them are slim cuts about 1.8 mm wide that stop at the iron ends and at a brace in the middle of the back, so the bench lifts off the mat whole. The slats are close to 4 mm deep when the bench is 100 mm wide, and the thinnest part of the ironwork is the bracket under the seat at about 2.7 mm.
That makes the slatted bench safe in card, vinyl and thin wood at 100 mm. For anything smaller, the park bench silhouette has no slat cuts at all and the garden bench is built from square timber with nothing fine in it.
Benches for memory, weddings and scenery
Benches carry meaning: a seat for two, a place someone used to sit. The memorial bench has an empty plate on its back for a name and dates, and the bench with a heart is drawn for wedding stationery and anniversary frames. The silhouette, the bench with a lamp and the bench under a tree each stand on a flat strip of ground, so they can be glued into a layered paper scene or a shadow box without any trimming.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How big is the blank plaque on the memorial bench?
About 26 mm wide and 13 mm tall when the whole design is 100 mm wide, which includes the pot of daisies. Cut the bench at 250 mm and the plate is about 65 by 32 mm, enough for a name and two dates in vinyl or engraving.
Which bench should I use in a shadow box?
The park bench silhouette, the bench with a street lamp or the bench under a tree. Each is a single piece on a flat strip of ground with nothing thinner than about 2 mm, so it stands up as a layer of scenery.
Do the chains on the porch swing hold together?
Yes. Each chain is one joined column of links, alternately round and narrow, welded to the beam at the top and to the bench at the bottom. The round links have a small hole in them, so weed those with a pin.
