Teeth, scutes and how small you can go

An alligator is long and low, so at 100 mm long the side views are only about 25 mm tall, and the fine parts are finer than they look on screen. The scutes along the back are about 2 mm high and the claws taper to under 1 mm, though as points rather than necks, so they cut cleanly in vinyl and card. The zigzag mouth is a cut a little over 1 mm wide. For wood or acrylic, scale a side view to 200 mm or more, or pick the alligator silhouette, which has no inside cuts.

On the designs with the mouth shut, the teeth are made by a single zigzag line cut between the jaws. Put white or cream behind it and you get two interlocking rows of teeth for nothing.

Side on or from above

The alligators in profile are wide and short, which suits the long side of a cooler, a boat name, a shelf edge or the bottom of a sign. The alligators from above fit a square or a circle better and are the usual choice for car windows and tumblers. The tribal alligator is exactly symmetrical, so it can be folded in half for a paper cut or centred on a hat.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Is this an alligator or a crocodile?

An alligator. The snout is broad and rounded at the tip, as an alligator's is, where a crocodile has a narrower, more pointed one. In silhouette the two are close enough that the side views work for either.

How do I show the teeth in a second colour?

Cut the alligator from green or black and lay it over white. On the designs with a shut mouth, the white shows through the zigzag cut as teeth. On the open-mouthed ones the teeth are part of the body, so cut the file a second time in white and keep only the teeth to stick on top.

Can I put a letter in the alligator monogram frame?

Yes. The ring is about 32 mm across inside when the file is 100 mm long. Size your initial to about three quarters of that, centre it in the ring and weld or attach the two before cutting.
