One shape, many names
Teardrop, tear drop, water drop, raindrop and droplet are all the same outline: a point at the top that widens into a round base. What changes is the proportion. A raindrop is drawn long and slim, a water drop short and full, and an earring somewhere between. This set has each of them, and because the base of every drop is a true half circle, they sit neatly on a round hole, a circle frame or the edge of another drop.
The point is the part to watch. In adhesive vinyl a needle point is the first thing to lift, so press it down well or choose the wide teardrop, whose point is blunter. In wood and acrylic a sharp point is fragile and snags on clothes, which is why every earring here has its point rounded off.
Cutting teardrop earrings
The earring files are drawn 100 mm tall like everything else, so scale them down: 40 to 60 mm tall is usual. The hanging hole is about 4.5 mm across at 100 mm, which makes it a little over 2 mm on a 50 mm earring: right for a standard jump ring. If you go smaller than 40 mm, enlarge the hole in your software or punch it by hand.
Cut two of each. The plain blank, the cut-out, the leaf and the fan design are the same both ways round, so there is no left or right. For the layered earring, cut the three layers from three materials, line up the holes and hang all three on one ring: they are not glued, so they swing against each other.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What size should a teardrop earring be?
Most teardrop earrings are 40 to 60 mm tall. Scale the file to that height with the proportions locked. At 50 mm the hanging hole is a little over 2 mm across and the band of the cut-out earring is just under 5 mm wide, which is strong enough in leather, cork, 3 mm wood and acrylic.
How do I make a water drop look shiny in one colour?
Use the water drop with a shine. The highlight is cut out of the drop, so whatever is behind it shows through as the gleam: white on a white bottle, or the bare surface on glass. For a two-colour drop, cut the solid teardrop in a light blue and lay the water drop over it in a darker one.
Is a raindrop really teardrop shaped?
No. A falling raindrop is round when small and flattens like a bun as it gets bigger; it never has a point. The teardrop is the shape of a drop just as it lets go of a tap or a leaf, and it has become the sign for water everywhere, so that is what these files draw.
