A thin stem and a thinner pick
A martini glass is a wide triangle balanced on a stem, and the stem is what decides how small you can cut it. In these files the stem is a little over 4 mm wide when the glass is 100 mm tall. Vinyl, iron-on and card manage that at half size. For plywood or acrylic keep the glass at 90 mm or taller, and run the grain of the wood up the stem.
The cocktail pick is thinner still, a little over 2 mm at full size, and it is the only thing that holds the olive to the glass. Weed along the pick, from the olive towards the ball on its end, and it will not lift. Where a glass holds a drink, the drink is the solid part and the air above it is cut away, which leaves the wall of the bowl as a line under 3 mm wide. Pull that waste out towards the rim.
Party cups, bar signs and shirts
For a real glass or a plastic party cup, cut a design from permanent vinyl at 50 to 60 mm tall so it lies flat on the curve, and keep it away from the rim. The clinking pair and the row of three are wide, so they suit banners, menu headers and the front of a bar cart. The glass with a high heel is the usual choice for a girls’ night shirt in iron-on: mirror it before you cut.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make the olive green and the pimento red?
Use the layered martini glass. It has the glass, the drink, the olive and the pimento as four separate layers, each in its own colour. Cut the glass first and stack the others on top of it. In the single colour designs the pimento is a hole, so a scrap of red vinyl behind it does the same job.
Which martini design is best for a small sticker?
The solid martini glass with an olive pick. Nothing is cut out of it, so there is no bowl wall to tear, and it stays clear down to about 30 mm tall. The half full glass with an olive needs about 50 mm for the wall of the bowl and the pick to hold.
Will the shaker cut as one piece?
Yes. The lines between the tin, the strainer top and the cap are slots that stop a few millimetres short of each edge, and the two glints on the tin are closed slots as well. Nothing falls out except the slots themselves.
