Mast, sails and what joins them
On a real boat there is air between the mast and the sails, which in a cut file means loose triangles. Here each sail overlaps the mast and the boom, and the hull overlaps the foot of the mast, so the boat is one piece from pennant to keel. The mast is a little under 3 mm wide when the boat is 100 mm tall, but it is backed by the sails for most of its height and only stands alone at the very top.
The seams on the sails and the stripe on the hull are cut lines about 1.5 mm wide that stop short of every edge. They weed out with a pin in vinyl and cut as clean single lines on a laser. If you want a sail with no lines at all, use the sailboat silhouette.
By the sea, on the wall
Sailboats suit beach houses, bathrooms, nurseries and anything for someone who sails. The row of three boats makes a border along the top of a sign. The boat at sunset in a ring fits a round plaque or a coaster. The monogram frame has one big open sail for an initial, and the boat with a heart for a sail is made for wedding signs at a harbour or on a beach.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which sailboat is best for a child’s room?
The simple sail boat for children. It has a round hull, two soft-cornered sails and a thick mast, with nothing thinner than about 3.5 mm when the boat is 100 mm tall. Cut it large in two or three colours of vinyl, or small as a sticker.
Can I colour the sails and the hull differently?
Yes. The layered sailboat has the sails, the hull with its mast, the sea, the sun and the sky as separate layers in one file. For the other boats, cut the file twice in two colours and take the sails from one cut and the hull from the other.
What is the difference between the sloop, the yacht and the schooner?
A sloop has one mast with a mainsail and a jib, and is the boat most people picture. The yacht here is a racing sloop with a tall rig and a deep keel. A schooner has two masts with the taller one at the back, and four-sided gaff sails.
