Free afro SVG files

Free afro SVG files: women in profile and from the front with a round afro, puffs, braids, locs, a head wrap or a flower in the hair, plus the hair on its own, a single braid and a pick comb. The heads are plain silhouettes with no face detail, and they are nobody’s likeness.

A curled edge that still cuts cleanly

An afro reads by its outline, so the edge matters more than anything inside it. Here the hair is an oval with a ring of soft bumps about 10 mm across at 100 mm, with the dips between them rounded off. That is enough to say "curls" without leaving dozens of tight corners for a blade to drag through. The profile under it is one generic drawing made for this library: a forehead, nose, lips and chin as a single line, with no eye or other detail.

The fine parts are the cut lines. Hairlines, partings and the hoop earring in the profiles are slots a little under 2 mm wide at 100 mm, and each stops short of the edge so that nothing falls away. They cut well in vinyl and iron-on from about 90 mm tall. The braids and the locs are separate strands about 4.5 mm wide at 100 mm that hang free at the bottom, so cut those two at 120 mm or more and press iron-on under a cover sheet so that no strand shifts.

Profile, front or hair alone

The profiles suit shirts, tote bags and framed prints, and the silhouette bust has a level base for a shadow box. The front views leave the face open, with only the jaw drawn, so they centre well on a mirror, a notebook or a salon window. The two hair shapes have an opening where the face would be: lay them over a photograph, a child’s drawing of herself or a name.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Are the women in these designs based on real people?

No. The profile and the front view are generic drawings made for this library, with no eyes, no expression and no feature taken from any one person. They are meant to stand for whoever you are making the piece for.

What colours work for the layered afro lady?

The file comes in near black, a warm brown, red and gold, but each layer is its own shape, so you can change them freely. Pick the skin layer from the browns your vinyl or card range offers, keep the hair darker than the skin so the hairline shows, and use a metallic for the hoop.

How large should I cut the braids and the locs?

At 120 mm tall or more. At that size each braid is about 5 mm wide and the gaps between strands are wide enough to weed. Smaller than that, the profile with the round afro or the silhouette bust is a better choice because nothing in them hangs loose.
