Slim limbs, and where they are slimmest
A yoga pose is mostly long lines, and the arms are the parts that tear. On these figures an arm runs from about 4.5 mm at the shoulder to 2.6 mm at the fingertips when the figure is roughly 80 mm tall, and every hand and foot ends in a round tip instead of a sliver. That is comfortable in vinyl and iron-on at 80 mm and above. The row of three poses is smaller in scale, so cut that one at 150 mm wide or more.
In card, lift a figure from the hips and let the arms follow. Tree pose, downward dog, the lunge and cobra stand on a strip of mat that stiffens the piece, which makes them better for thin wood than warrior or dancer, where nothing ties the feet together. The two mandalas and the monogram frame are rings, so they hold their shape on their own; weed the petals from the middle outwards.
Choosing a pose
The seated pose is the one most people picture, and it is exactly mirrored, so it centres itself on a tote, a journal or a studio door. Warrior and cobra are wide and low and fit across the top of a timetable. Tree and dancer are tall and suit a water bottle or the spine of a mat bag. None of the figures has a face, and all wear their hair in a bun, so any of them can stand for the person you are making it for.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which yoga design suits a studio sign or a wall decal?
The yoga mandala with a seated pose, or the pose on a lotus. Both are mirrored and read from across a room. Cut them at 300 mm or more in matt vinyl and weed the outlined petals last. For a door, the lotus pose on its own at 150 mm is enough.
Will tree pose stand up in a shadow box?
Yes. The figure stands on a straight strip of mat a little over a third as wide as she is tall, and the strip is part of the same piece. Glue the strip to the floor of the box or slot it into a base. Cut it from card of 300 gsm or more, because the piece is tall and narrow.
How small can I cut the yoga poses?
In adhesive vinyl, about 60 mm on the longer side for the single poses, with a sharp blade. The row of three, the ball and the monogram frame have smaller figures, so keep those at 120 mm or more. The rolled mat is a solid shape and goes down to 40 mm.
