A long shape with a thin tip

A carrot is long and narrow, so it is the tip that sets the smallest size. On the classic carrot the root is about 31 mm across the shoulders and about 4 mm at the tip when the whole design is 100 mm. That is fine in vinyl and card, but in wood or acrylic the tip snaps easily, so cut it at 120 mm or more or choose the simple chunky carrot, which has a blunt end.

The fronds of the leafy top are pairs of small pointed leaflets on a stalk. They weed in one piece because they are part of the outline, not separate cuts. On heat transfer vinyl press the leaflets well, as there is a lot of edge there for a wash to lift.

Orange root, green top

A carrot needs two colours to look like itself. The quick way is to cut any of the single-colour carrots once in orange and once in green, then trim each at the crown, where the fronds meet the root, and keep the root from one and the top from the other. The layered carrot does this for you and adds darker ring marks. The carrot nose has no top at all, so it is a single orange cut.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What size should a carrot nose be for a snowman?

For a snowman face on a 300 mm door hanger, cut the carrot nose about 110 mm long. For a child-sized jumper or a tote bag, 60 to 80 mm looks right. The nose has no leaves, so it cuts quickly in orange vinyl, felt or painted wood.

Can I put a name on a carrot?

Use the split carrot, which leaves a clear band across the root, or the carrot wreath, which has an open middle. The band on the split carrot is about 14 mm tall when the carrot is 100 mm tall, so it suits a short name.

Which carrot is best for plant markers?

The carrot silhouette. Cut it from 3 mm plywood or acrylic at about 80 mm long and glue it to a stake. It has no inside cuts to fill with soil, and the fronds are wide enough to survive a season outdoors.
