A lot of small parts, welded
A motorcycle is spokes, pipes and gaps, which makes it one of the harder things to cut. Every part here overlaps the next, so each bike is a single piece, but the parts are still slim. On the cruiser the spokes are about 1.7 mm wide and the mirror stalk about 2 mm when the bike is 100 mm long. Cut it at 100 mm or larger in vinyl or card, and at 200 mm or more in wood.
For small work use the motorcycle silhouette, which has solid wheels, or the helmet, the engine and the winged wheel, which are bold shapes. The dirt bike has knobbly tyres made of separate little blocks welded to the rim: they look right at 120 mm and above and start to close up below that.
Riders and race numbers
The biker and the motocross rider are part of their machines, helmet and all, so there is nothing to line up. The dirt bike has two blank number boards, one in front of the bars and one on the side panel. Add a race number in your cutting software, cut from a second colour and laid on top. The monogram frame takes an initial or a number inside the headlamp ring.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which motorcycle works on a small decal?
The motorcycle silhouette. It has solid wheels and no spokes, and its thinnest parts are the mirror stalk and the bars at about 2 mm when the bike is 100 mm long. At 60 mm it still weeds cleanly in vinyl. The helmet works smaller still.
Can I add a number to the dirt bike?
Yes. The board on the side, under the seat, is about 12 mm wide when the bike is 100 mm long. Type the number in your cutting software, size it to the board and cut it from a contrasting colour to stick on top. On a 300 mm wall decal the board is over 30 mm wide.
Is this any particular make of motorcycle?
No. The cruiser, the bobber, the dirt bike and the scooter are types, drawn from scratch. None copies a maker’s tank, engine covers or badge, which keeps them safe to use on things you sell.
