The flame and the wick
A flame floats above its candle, which in a cut file would make it a loose piece. Here every flame is joined to its candle by a wick about 3 mm wide when the candle is 100 mm tall, short enough to hide under the flame and strong enough to cut. The flame itself has a small flame cut from its heart, so yellow card or gold foil behind it shows as the bright core.
The thinnest parts are the wick and, on the menorah and the candelabra, the curved branches, which are a little under 4 mm wide at 100 mm. Both cut well in vinyl from about 70 mm. For wood, cut the menorah and the kinara at 150 mm wide or more so the candles do not snap at the cups.
Remembrance, festivals and quiet evenings
Candles are cut for memorial cards and ornaments, for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali and Advent, and for labels on home-made candles and wax melts. The memory candle has an open panel for a name and dates, and the jar candle has a blank label. The candlestick, the candle holder and the pillar candle each stand on a flat foot, so they can be glued upright by a tab on a mantelpiece in a paper scene or a shadow box.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I colour the Kwanzaa candles?
Cut the kinara once in black or brown and weed it as normal. Then cut it again in red and in green, and keep only the three left-hand candles from the red and the three right-hand candles from the green. Lay those over the first cut.
Can I add a name to the memory candle?
Yes. The panel on the front is a real opening just over 30 mm wide when the design is 100 mm across. Put the name and dates inside it in your cutting software, or cut the candle from card and write on a backing sheet that shows through.
Which candle is safest to cut small?
The candle silhouette. Its flame is solid, its wick is hidden and nothing in it is thinner than about 4 mm at 100 mm tall, so it works as a 30 mm sticker or a gift tag.
