Solid jars and glass jars

The jars come in two kinds. A solid jar is a filled shape with its details cut out of it: the glints, the fireflies, the stars. It is sturdy, weeds quickly and suits vinyl on a tumbler or a wooden sign. A glass jar is drawn as a band round the edge, about 3 mm wide when the jar is 100 mm tall, with the inside left open so flowers or hearts can stand in it. That band is the part to protect: in card or wood, cut glass jars at 80 mm or taller.

On every lidded jar the screw band has eight short ridges, each a slot under 2 mm wide. They are the smallest cuts in the set. Below about 60 mm tall they are not worth weeding, so pick the mason jar silhouette, which leaves them out.

Filling the jar yourself

The monogram frame is an empty jar with a band about 5 mm wide: put an initial, a name, a recipe title or a row of small shapes inside it. The split jar leaves a band across the middle for a name. The classic jar and the silhouette have a plain front for lettering cut in a second colour, which is how most gift jar labels and pantry labels are made.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
