What to make with them
Barbecue designs go on aprons, on the wooden board that carries the meat to the table, on rub and sauce jars, and on signs for the patio. For an apron, cut the kettle grill or the crossed tools about 180 mm wide in heat transfer vinyl and press it on the bib. For a cutting board, engrave the outline or the badge: an engraved line stands up to washing better than a filled area, which fills with fat and darkens. The grate makes a round trivet in 6 mm plywood, and the steak and the sausage are small enough for gift tags.
Cutting notes
The grills have thin legs: 3.2 mm at the foot when the file is cut at 100 mm. In vinyl that is fine down to about 60 mm tall; below that the legs are hard to weed and the knob and vent holes close up. The brick pit has mortar slots about 1.5 mm wide, so keep it at 100 mm or more. The crossed tools, the steak and the badge are the boldest designs and cut cleanly at 40 mm.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which grill design is best for a small decal?
The steak, the crossed spatula and fork, or the kettle grill badge. They have the fewest thin parts. The gas grill and the smokers carry more detail, such as knobs, door lines and vents, and need to be about 80 mm tall or more to weed well.
Can I add a name to the badge?
Yes. Open the badge in your cutting software, type the name, and curve it to follow the ring above the grill or below it. Weld or attach the lettering to the ring so that it stays in place when you cut.
Is the grill grate the right size for a real grill?
No, it is a picture of one, 100 mm across. As a trivet, scale it to 180 or 200 mm and cut it from plywood at least 6 mm thick. It is not meant for the fire.
