Eyes are windows
An alien is mostly eyes. On the long-chinned head each eye is a window nearly 30 mm long at full size, with a small glint left solid at the outer corner and joined to the rim. Cut the head from green, silver or glow in the dark vinyl and stick it on something dark, and the eyes go black by themselves. On a light surface, back the eyes with black first.
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The fine parts are the antennae, about 3.5 mm thick on the friendly face and nearer 3 mm on the little waving alien, and the fingers of its hands, which are about 3 mm. Vinyl and card hold those well down to about 60 mm. For wood or acrylic, use the standing silhouette, the head or the saucer, and keep them at 80 mm or more.
Saucers and beams
The UFO, the saucer with a beam frame and the saucer lifting a cow all have the beam welded to the underside of the ship, so each is a single piece. Glow in the dark or reflective vinyl suits them: cut the UFO at 150 mm for a bedroom ceiling or a telescope case. The beam frame is left blank inside, about 45 mm wide at its middle when the file is 100 mm tall, for a name or a party date.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Are these aliens from a film or a game?
No. They are our own drawings of the aliens of folklore and old sighting stories: a big-eyed head, a saucer with a dome, a small friendly creature with antennae. None of them copies a character from a film, a show, a game or a toy.
How do I make the eyes black on a green alien?
Cut the head in green and lay it over a piece of black, or stick it straight on to a dark shirt or a black notebook. The eyes are cut right through, so whatever is behind them shows. The layered alien face has the eyes, pupils and cheeks as separate colours if you want more than two.
Which alien is best for glow in the dark vinyl?
The alien head, the UFO with a beam and the standing silhouette. Glow vinyl is thick and does not like fine detail, and those three have large solid areas, which also store more light. Cut them at 80 mm or larger and press the edges down well.
