Logs, log ends and the lines between them
What makes a cabin a log cabin is the stack of round log ends up each corner and the lines between the logs. Here the lines are cuts about 1.5 mm wide when the cabin is 100 mm across, and they stop short of the corners, the door and the window, so the wall stays in one piece. The door is cut round three sides only and stays joined along its foot.
Those lines are easy to weed in vinyl from about 80 mm wide and they engrave cleanly on a laser. For anything smaller, the simple cabin and the cabin silhouette have only large openings. For plywood, cut the detailed cabins at 150 mm or more: the bars of the window are a little over 2 mm wide at 100 mm.
Cabin signs, guest books and paper scenes
Cabins are cut for welcome signs, guest books, key racks, mugs for the lake and Christmas cards. The cabin sign frame has an open front wall for a family name or the year the place was built. Every cabin here stands on a straight strip of ground, so the silhouette, the A-frame and the cabin in the mountains can each be glued upright by a tab as one layer of a paper scene or a shadow box.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which cabin should I use for a welcome sign?
The cabin sign frame if the name goes inside the cabin, or the cabin silhouette in the pines if the lettering goes underneath. Both read clearly from across a room, and neither has cut lines too fine for wood.
Is the A-frame hard to weed?
No. Its openings are all glass: the split gable window, two door panes and a small window each side. The bars between them are a little over 2 mm wide when the cabin is 100 mm across, so lift the waste slowly and they stay put.
Can I light the cabin window from behind?
Yes. The window panes are real openings and on the silhouette the doorway is open too. Glue yellow vellum behind them and stand a battery tea light at the back. Never use a flame behind paper or wood.
