Free question mark SVG files

Free question mark SVG files: bold, rounded, thin, cursive and outline marks, a mark in a circle, in a speech bubble and under a magnifying glass, with a matching exclamation mark, the two together and the interrobang. Every mark is drawn from arcs and lines, not taken from a typeface.

A hook and a dot

A question mark is two pieces: the hook and the dot under it. That matters when you cut one. The plain marks here come as loose pairs, so on vinyl you lift both with one piece of transfer tape to keep the gap, and on a laser the dot drops free and has to be glued back in place. Keep the waste sheet: the hole it leaves is a ready-made template for spacing the two.

The hook is drawn as most of a circle that curves back to the centre line, with the stem and the dot both on that line. In the bold mark the line is about 16 mm wide at 100 mm tall, so it can be cut down to 20 mm tall and still weed easily. The thin mark needs 40 mm or more.

One-piece versions

Where loose pieces are a nuisance, use the mark in a solid circle, the speech bubble or the magnifying glass. In each the mark is cut out of a larger shape, so the surface behind shows through as the question mark and the piece you handle is a single one. These are the ones to choose for wood, acrylic, card toppers and stencils.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Why do the question mark files have two pieces?

Because the dot does not touch the hook. That is true of the sign itself, not a fault in the file. If you need a single piece, choose the question mark in a solid circle, in a speech bubble or under a magnifying glass, where the mark is cut out of one shape.

What is an interrobang?

It is a question mark and an exclamation mark printed as one sign, for a question asked in surprise or disbelief. An American advertising man, Martin Speckter, proposed it in 1962. It never became common, but it is a favourite with people who love type, and it makes a good gift for an editor or a teacher.

How do I use the Spanish question mark pair?

In Spanish a question opens with an upside-down mark and closes with the usual one. Put the opening mark before the first word and the closing mark after the last. The opening mark hangs below the line of the words, which is why it sits lower in the file.
