How a ring is drawn

A ring is an awkward thing to draw flat, so these files use the convention everyone reads at once: the band is seen face on, as a circle with a round hole, and the stone on top of it is seen from the side, with its flat table, its widest line (the girdle) and its point underneath. On the solid rings the facets are slots about 1.7 mm wide when the ring is 100 mm tall. They stop short of the edge of the stone and of one another, so the stone never falls apart and the band, setting and stone lift as one piece.

The linked rings are different. To show one band passing under the other there has to be a gap, so those cut as two pieces; move them together on transfer tape.

Wedding and engagement projects

For save-the-date cards, a ring 30 to 40 mm tall sits well beside the names. For a she-said-yes sign or a ring bearer pillow, 120 mm and up shows the facets clearly. The monogram frame is drawn with a slim band, about 4.6 mm at full size, so there is plenty of room inside for two initials; keep it 80 mm or more so the band is not too fine. Gold, silver and rose gold foil vinyl all suit the plain band and the interlocking rings.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
