One piece, with the features as windows

Each face is a disc 100 mm across with the eyes, brows and mouth cut out of it. That makes it one piece of vinyl or card, which is easy to place: there are no loose eyes to line up. Cut the face in yellow and lay it on black, dark brown or the surface itself, and the windows become the features. Where a face has teeth, a tongue or a pupil, that part is joined to the edge of its window so it cannot fall out.

Tears, hearts, the thinking hand and the party hat reach past the edge of the face. They are welded to it, and a seam about 2 mm wide is cut round them where they cross the face, with a bridge at each side. The finest parts in the set are those seams, the teeth of the zip and the straps of the mask, all a little over 2 mm at full size, so cut those faces at 60 mm or more.

Stickers, shirts and party things

At 40 to 50 mm the plainer faces (happy, surprised, heart eyes, rolling eyes) make good stickers for water bottles and notebooks. For a party, cut several at 150 mm from yellow card and tape them to sticks as photo props. On a shirt, iron-on vinyl in yellow works on dark fabric because the cloth shows through the windows as the features: mirror the design before cutting.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
