Aries in the zodiac

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and its figure is the ram. By the usual tropical dates the Sun is in Aries from 21 March to 19 April; the first and last day can move by one from year to year. Astrology counts Aries as a fire sign, and its ruler is Mars.

The glyph is a stem that parts into the two curling horns of a ram. The constellation here is Aries, drawn from the catalogue positions of 4 of its stars on a map centred on the figure, so its proportions are those of the sky. The brightest of them, Hamal, is shown as a five-pointed star and the others as discs sized by brightness.

Cutting the Aries ram

The ram is recognised by its horn, so the silhouette keeps a small window at the centre of the curl. That window and the four legs are the parts to watch: every file is 100 mm on its longer side, and at that size each leg is about 5 mm wide above the hoof. Vinyl and card hold that down to 50 mm wide. For 3 mm plywood keep the ram at 100 mm or more, and choose the ram’s head for anything smaller, because it has no legs to snap.

The Aries glyph is one piece with two fine horn tips, which makes it the easiest of the twelve to weed. The constellation is small and simple, four stars in a bent line, so it suits a narrow space such as a bookmark or the spine of a journal.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What are the dates for Aries?

By the usual tropical dates, 21 March to 19 April. The Sun does not cross into the sign at the same hour every year, so some calendars give a first or last day one earlier or later. No design here carries numerals: the badge has a blank band for the dates in your own lettering.

Which stars are in the Aries constellation design?

Four: Hamal, the brightest, drawn as a five-pointed star, then Sheratan and Mesarthim close together at the western end and 41 Arietis out to the east. They are placed from their catalogue positions, so the bend in the line is the one you see in the sky.

Is the ram’s head symmetrical?

Yes, exactly. The right half is drawn and mirrored about the centre line, so the two horns match and the head can be folded, scored down the middle or centred on a shirt without looking lopsided. The standing ram is a side view and faces left; flip it in your cutting software to face right.
