Stitching you can weed
The look of a western boot is in its stitching: the flames or leaves sewn up the shaft, the curved seam where the foot meets the leg, the welt round the sole and the stacked layers of the heel. Here each of those is a slot about 1.5 mm wide when the boot is 100 mm tall. The slots stop short of the edge and of each other, so the boot holds together as one piece and the stitching shows as the colour behind it.
At 100 mm tall the slots weed easily with a pin. Below about 60 mm they become too fine for most vinyl, so for small work use the silhouette, or the star boot, which has one large cut-out.
Which way the boot faces
Every boot points left, toe first, except the silhouette, which faces right. For a matching pair on a shirt or either side of a name, copy the boot and flip the copy in your software. The boot prints are already a left and a right. On tumblers, keep a single boot under 80 mm tall so that the heel and toe do not lift on the curve.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I add an initial to the boot?
Yes. The monogram frame has an oval window in the shaft. Type the letter in your cutting software, size it to about two thirds of the window and cut it from a second colour, or leave the window open and place the boot over a letter cut in a larger layer.
How do I make a left and a right boot?
Use the same file twice and mirror one copy. The stitching is the same on both sides of a real boot, so the mirrored copy is correct as it stands.
Will the spur hold together?
Yes. The rowel is welded to its shank and the shank to the back of the heel, with a small hole through the middle of the rowel. Its points are the finest part, so cut that design 90 mm or more across.
