Spokes are the part to watch
On the wagon wheel alone, each spoke is about 3.4 mm wide at the rim and nearly 5 mm at the hub when the wheel is 100 mm across, so it cuts well in vinyl from 60 mm and in 3 mm plywood from about 150 mm. The wheels on the wagons are much smaller: on the covered wagon at 100 mm long the back wheel is about 29 mm across with spokes 2 mm wide. Cut the wagons at 150 mm or more if you want every spoke, and weed from the hub outwards.
Each wagon wheel is joined to the wagon at its hub and by the reach that runs between the two axles, so the design lifts in one piece. The covered wagon silhouette has nothing cut out of its bonnet or box and stands on a straight strip of ground, which makes it the one for a shadow box or the foot of a layered western scene.
Which wagon is which
A covered wagon has a flat box under a tall canvas bonnet. The Conestoga is the heavier freight wagon: its box dips in the middle so that the load could not slide on a hill, and the bonnet juts out at both ends. The farm wagon is the open box with a spring seat, and the hay wagon is a flat bed with a rack at each end. The little wagon with a long handle is the child’s pull toy.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How big should I cut the wagon wheel for a wall sign?
For plywood or MDF, 300 to 450 mm across is usual. At 300 mm the spokes are about 10 mm wide at the rim and the rim itself is 27 mm deep, which is sturdy. The six band marks on the hub and the notches in the rim are details to engrave or cut through as you prefer.
How do I add a name to the half wagon wheel?
The half wheel stands on a plank about 8 mm tall when the design is 100 mm wide. Type the name in your cutting software, set it under the plank and weld the tops of the letters to it, or cut the name from a second colour and place it below.
Do the wheels on the covered wagon fall out when cut?
No. Each wheel is a rim with spokes and a hub, and the hub is welded to a post under the wagon box and to the reach between the axles. The only loose parts are the pieces between the spokes, which are waste.
