A level top edge and uneven runs
A drip border works because of two things: a dead straight top edge, which lines up with whatever it hangs from, and runs that are all different. Here the lengths, widths and spacings of the runs come from a fixed random sequence, so no two neighbours match, and the hollows between them are rounded the way a liquid would leave them. Each run ends in a bead a little wider than the run itself.
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. On the plain border at that size the runs are between 3.5 and 6.5 mm wide, and nothing is narrower than about 2.5 mm, so it weeds quickly and survives a window being cleaned. To go round a mirror or along a shelf, cut the border several times and butt the ends together: the band is the same depth at both ends, so the joins do not show. Flip every other copy so the pattern does not repeat.
Vinyl, windows and what to cut it from
Red is not the only choice. A deep red adhesive vinyl reads best on glass and white doors, black gives a slime or tar look on pale walls, and a glossy red on a black shirt looks wet. For windows, static cling film lets you peel everything off on the first of November. The splatter and the spray are made of loose droplets, so weed them on the backing sheet and move each one in a single piece of transfer tape. The splat in one piece and the borders need no tape at all in card or felt.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make a blood drip border longer?
Cut it more than once and line the pieces up end to end. The band is the same depth at both ends, so the joins vanish, and flipping every second piece stops the runs from repeating. For a 600 mm shelf, three copies at 200 mm wide do it.
Will the loose droplets of the splatter stay in place?
Yes, if you move them with transfer tape. Weed the sheet while it is still on its backing, press one piece of tape over the whole splatter, and lift the splat and all its droplets together. If you would sooner not use tape, cut the blood splat in one piece, which has nothing loose.
Can I use the drips on a cake board, a cup or a shirt?
On a shirt, cut the border from glossy red iron-on and press it under a collar or across the shoulders. On a cup, measure round the rim and scale the border to that length. Vinyl is not food safe, so on a cake board keep it to the part that the cake does not touch.
