Plain figures that take your colours

These are silhouettes seen from the front, with no faces, no lettering and no team marks, so the figure belongs to whichever squad you cut it for. What says cheerleader is in the outline: a flared skirt with three pleats cut as notches from the hem, a ponytail under a big bow, and a shaggy pom pom in each hand. Cut the figure in one team colour and lay it on the other, or use the layered version, which splits the figure, the uniform and the pom poms with the bow into three colours.

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The slimmest parts are the wrists and ankles, between 3.3 and 5 mm wide at that size, so the figures hold in vinyl down to about 40 mm and in 3 mm wood from about 100 mm. The outline version is a line, 1.6 mm at its narrowest. The strands of the pom poms end in points: weed them last, pulling from the centre of the pom pom outwards.

Which pose for which job

The toe touch and the splits are about twice as wide as they are tall, which suits the back of a shirt, a banner or the lid of a box. The high V, the liberty and the K motion are tall and fit tumblers, water bottles and locker tags. The three cheerleaders in a row stand on a strip of ground, so the group moves as one piece on transfer tape. The cheerleader with hands on hips has no pom poms and no inside cuts at all, which makes it the one to use small, as confetti or on a bow box label.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Can I change the colours of the layered cheerleader?

Yes. The colours in the file only show which layer is which. Cut the whole figure from a dark colour, the top and skirt from your main team colour and the pom poms and bow from the second colour, then stack them in that order. In heat transfer vinyl, press the figure first and the two smaller layers on top.

How small can I cut a cheerleader?

The silhouette with hands on hips is the safest: nothing on it is narrower than 4.5 mm at 100 mm tall, so it still holds at 30 mm. The figures with pom poms are best kept to 40 mm or more, because the points of the strands turn to dots below that.

How do I add a name to the pom pom monogram frame?

The clear circle inside the ring of pom poms is about 45 mm across when the frame is 100 mm wide. Type an initial or a short name, size it to fit and either weld it to the ring so that it cuts as one piece, or cut it from a second colour and lay it in the middle.
