Free flag SVG files

Free flag SVG files: a waving blank flag on a pole, a pennant, checkered racing flags, a pirate flag, crossed flags, a golf pin, bunting and a tall flagpole. None carries a country or a state, so each is ready for your own colours, name or emblem.

Blank flags to make your own

Most of these flags are plain on purpose. Cut the waving flag in any colour, then add a name, a number or a small emblem on top in a second colour. To cut words out of the cloth instead, place the text over the flag in your cutting software and slice it. Letters set straight across look right on the flat icon flag; on the rippling flags, keep the words short and near the pole, where the cloth is still.

The pennant is the one to use for names: its body is a long clear triangle, widest beside the band. The crossed flags leave two clear cloths, one for each side of a pairing such as two initials or two team colours.

Sizes and what to watch for

On the single flags the pole is about 3.5 mm thick when the file is 100 mm tall. That is sturdy in vinyl and card, but a pole cut from 3 mm wood at that size is a thin stick: for wood or acrylic cut at 150 mm or more, or use the icon flag, whose pole is over 5 mm thick.

The checkered flags hold together through a small diamond at each corner where two dark checks meet. On vinyl, weed the light checks one at a time and press the diamonds down before you lift the transfer tape. The pirate flag is a stencil with short ties to the eyes and nose, so nothing falls out.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I put a name or an emblem on a blank flag?

Place your text or shape over the cloth in your cutting software. Slice it to cut it out of the flag, or cut it apart in a second colour and layer it on top. Keep it clear of the pole and of the free end, where the ripple is strongest.

Will the checkered flag fall apart when I cut it?

No. The dark checks touch only at their corners, so each corner has a small diamond welded over it, and a thin border runs round the cloth. Flag, border and pole come off the mat as one piece.

Is there a country flag in this set?

No. These are generic flags: blank cloths, racing flags, a pirate flag, a golf pin and signal shapes. The library has a separate set of American flag files.
