Sizes, materials and the otter tail
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. A Labrador has a short, close coat, so its outline is clean: no feathering and no tufts, only the broad head, the deep chest and the thick otter tail, which is widest at the root and tapers evenly to the tip. That makes these some of the easiest dogs in the library to cut. The standing silhouette and the sitting Labrador have sturdy legs and no fine points apart from the end of the tail, so they hold up in 3 mm plywood at 80 mm wide and in vinyl at 40 mm.
The slits that mark the eye, the mouth, the ear and the thigh are about 2 mm wide at full size. The faces have more to weed: eyes with a catch-light, brows, the nose, the lips and the tongue. Cut a face at 70 mm or wider and lift the small pieces with a pin before you pull the waste away from the outside.
Black, yellow and chocolate
The single-colour designs are the right shape for any Labrador, so the colour is in the material: black vinyl for a black Lab, cream or pale gold for a yellow one, dark brown for a chocolate. Two designs are layered. The yellow Labrador face stacks a pale head, deeper yellow ears, dark features and a pink tongue. The chocolate Labrador with a ball stacks a brown body, a red collar, a darker ear and a dark eye and nose, and you can swap the brown for any coat colour.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which Labrador is best for a lead hook or a key rack?
The Labrador lying down and the standing silhouette. Both are long, low shapes with a level back, so there is room for a row of hooks along the body. Cut them from 6 mm plywood at 250 mm or wider, and put the screws through the chest and the haunch, where the wood is widest.
How do I make a fox red or a white Labrador?
Use the layered yellow Labrador face and change the sheets: a rich tan head with darker tan ears gives a fox red Lab, and an off-white head with cream ears gives the palest yellow. The dark features and the pink tongue stay the same.
What is the difference between these and the golden retriever set?
The coat. The golden retriever set has feathering on the chest, behind the legs and under the tail. These have the smooth outline, the broader head and the thick, round otter tail of a Labrador.
