Aquarius in the zodiac

Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac and its figure is the water bearer. By the usual tropical dates the Sun is in Aquarius from 20 January to 18 February; the first and last day can move by one from year to year. Astrology counts Aquarius as an air sign, and its ruler is Uranus in modern astrology and Saturn in the older tradition.

The glyph is two rows of waves, one above the other. The constellation here is Aquarius, drawn from the catalogue positions of 13 of its stars on a map centred on the figure, so its proportions are those of the sky. The brightest of them, Sadalsuud, is shown as a five-pointed star and the others as discs sized by brightness.

Cutting the Aquarius water bearer

Aquarius is an air sign whose figure pours water, and the water is what holds the silhouette together: the stream runs unbroken from the mouth of the jar to the pool, so the figure, the jar and the pool are one piece. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. At that size the stream is 5 to 8 mm wide and the arms between 4 and 5 mm, so vinyl and card hold the water bearer down to 70 mm tall. For plywood or acrylic cut it at 130 mm or more.

The Aquarius glyph is two separate rows of waves, so the plain glyph is two loose pieces: lift them together on transfer tape to keep them parallel. On the ring version both rows run into the ring, and on the pouring jar the two rows of waves are joined by the falling water.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What are the dates for Aquarius?

By the usual tropical dates, 20 January to 18 February. The Sun does not cross into the sign at the same hour every year, so some calendars give a first or last day one earlier or later. No design here carries numerals: the badge has a blank band for the dates in your own lettering.

Is Aquarius a water sign?

No, although the name and the waves suggest it. Astrology counts Aquarius as an air sign, with Gemini and Libra; the water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The figure is the water bearer, a person pouring water from a jar, which is why every design here has a jar, a stream or a row of waves in it.

Which stars are in the Aquarius constellation design?

Thirteen. Sadalsuud, the brightest, is the five-pointed star on the right, joined to Sadalmelik. Next to Sadalmelik is the Water Jar, a small Y of four stars: Sadachbia, Zeta, Eta and Pi Aquarii. From Sadalmelik a chain runs down through Ancha and then branches, one way to Skat and the other to Phi and Psi Aquarii, for the stream. The faint western end of the constellation, out to Albali, is left off so that the Water Jar is large enough to cut.
