Sizes, materials and the fur on a wolf
Every wolf here is 100 mm on its longer side. A wolf is a sturdy shape to cut. On the wolf silhouette the narrowest part is a leg, a little over 5 mm wide at that size, so it still holds together at 40 mm long in vinyl and is a safe choice for 3 mm plywood at 100 mm. The howling wolf and the howling wolf head are just as solid.
The fur is drawn as short pointed tufts at the chest, the shoulders and the back of the thigh, and as a ragged edge on the neck of the howling head. Points do not weaken a cut piece, but in vinyl they are the first parts to lift, so weed from the body outwards and press the tips down last. The scenes have finer parts: the pine trunks, the feather threads and the moon ring are 2 to 3 mm wide, so keep those at 100 mm or larger in wood.
Two ways to put a wolf against the moon
A single colour cannot show a black wolf on a white moon, so there are two answers here. In the wolf howling at the moon, the moon is a ring and the wolf, its rock and the pines stand inside it, all welded together: hang it in a window and the sky shows through. In the full moon with a howling wolf, the moon is solid and the wolf is the hole: cut the disc from white, yellow or mirror card and mount it on black.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which wolf should I use for a wooden or metal sign?
The wolf silhouette, the howling wolf or the howling wolf head. Nothing on them is narrower than 5 mm at 100 mm, and they have few or no inside cuts. The wolf in a pine forest also works well in plywood if you cut it 200 mm wide or more, which makes the tree trunks about 4 mm.
How do I hang the wolf dream catcher?
There is a small loop welded to the top of the hoop with a hole about 3.5 mm across at the size the file opens at. Thread cord or a jump ring through it. The feathers hang on threads about 2 mm wide, so cut it from card, faux leather or acrylic rather than thin vinyl, and scale it up for wood.
Can I make the wolf face look less like a fox?
It already differs where it matters: the ears are shorter and set wider, each cheek has a ruff of three points and the muzzle is broad with a large nose. Cut it in grey, black or white rather than orange and it reads as a wolf at once.
