Sizes, materials and the fine parts of a bulldog

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. A bulldog is a thick animal, so these are forgiving shapes: the legs of the standing English bulldog are about 9 mm across at full size and the stub tail is the only slim part. The sitting silhouette has no inside cuts at all, which makes it the one for small stickers, glitter card and key rings down to about 30 mm.

The faces carry the wrinkles, lips and teeth as slits about 2 mm wide at full size. In vinyl, cut a face at 80 mm or wider and lift the slivers with a pin; on a laser they come out as clean lines. The two lower teeth are left solid inside the jaw line, so they stay white on a white shirt only if you cut the layered face. In a single colour they are the same colour as the dog.

The French bulldog files have tall thin ear rims around the cut-out inner ear, about 2 mm wide at the narrowest. In 3 mm plywood keep those at 120 mm or more, or sand lightly with the grain so a rim does not snap.

Which bulldog for which job

The bulldog face and the bandana version fill a square and suit shirts, tote bags and round signs. The head in side view on its studded collar is a badge shape for bottle labels and kennel doors. The paw print is five loose pads, so it wants transfer tape in vinyl and a backing sheet in card. The monogram frame leaves about 50 mm of clear space above the face for an initial.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Which files are English bulldogs and which are French?

The French bulldog files say so in their names: the Frenchie face, the French bulldog standing and the mum and pup. They have tall round bat ears and a rounder head. Everything else is the English bulldog, with small folded rose ears, heavier jowls and the lower jaw pushed out.

How do I make the bulldog two colours, such as white with fawn patches?

Use the layered bulldog face. Cut the head from fawn or brindle card, the muzzle and blaze from cream or white, and the details from dark brown or black, then stack them. For a mostly white dog, swap the first two colours so the head is white and the muzzle piece is left off.

Can I add a name under the bulldog with the bandana?

Yes. The bandana is plain apart from its edge line and a small heart, so delete the heart in your cutting software and type a short name across the cloth instead. Keep the letters at least 2 mm thick at the size you cut, and cut them out of the cloth like the heart.
