Horns, tails and where they are thin
A devil is told by three things: horns, a pointed tail and a fork. The horns are stout and cut well at any size. The tail is the part to watch. In the tail on its own it thins from about 8 mm at the root to a little over 4 mm behind the spade when the file is 100 mm tall, and on the little devil and the hearts it is nearer 3 mm. Vinyl and card are happy with that. For wood or acrylic, scale those up to 150 mm or use the faces, which have no thin parts.
Faces are solid with the eyes, brows and mouth cut out as windows, so each one is a single piece. The fangs hang down into the mouth from the upper lip and the pupils are joined to the rim of the eye. Cut a face from red and lay it over black or yellow, and the windows light up as eyes and teeth.
Costumes and party tables
The mask is drawn to be worn. Scale it to 170 or 180 mm wide for an adult and about 150 mm for a child, cut it from stiff red card and thread elastic through the two side holes. The pair of horns and the horns and tail set are loose pieces on purpose: put them on a name, a photograph or a pumpkin. The trident is 100 mm tall as drawn and can be scaled up to full height and cut in sections from foam board.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I put devil horns and a tail on a name?
Use the devil horns and tail set, which is three loose pieces. Type the name in your cutting software, put a horn on each side of the top of the first letter and hang the tail from the last one, overlapping each by a millimetre or two, then weld the lot so that it cuts as one piece.
What size should the devil mask be?
Measure across the face from temple to temple and add about 20 mm. For most adults that gives 170 to 180 mm, and for children 140 to 155 mm. The eye holes are about 46 mm apart, centre to centre, at 100 mm wide, so they land at 80 mm apart on a 175 mm mask.
Which devil is right for small children?
The little devil with a pitchfork and the simple devil face. Both are round and smiling, with no fangs. The demon with long horns is the fierce one in the set, so keep that for older children and grown-up parties.
