Blades, bows and what breaks

A pair of scissors is two long tapering blades joined at one small pivot, which makes it a weak shape in stiff materials. In vinyl and card every design here cuts well from about 50 mm tall. In wood or acrylic the blade tips and the pivot are the parts that snap, so keep the open scissors at 100 mm or more, or use the simple icon or the safety scissors, which have much broader blades.

The finger holes are true holes, so whatever is underneath shows through them. On the open scissors the wall of each bow is about 4 mm wide when the design is 100 mm tall. Where the blades cross there are two short gaps beside the front blade. They are there to show which blade is on top, and they leave the pair in one piece.

Loose dashes

Two designs have loose pieces on purpose: the scissors on a dashed cut line and the blank coupon. The dashes are not joined to anything, so keep them on transfer tape to hold their spacing, or use the design as a print and cut. For a pen plotter, the dashes draw as small closed loops.

How to open the files

• Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
• Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
• LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
• Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
• Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
