Blank on purpose
Every fire service has its own badge, and those badges belong to the services. So nothing here copies one. The cross, the helmet plate and the monogram frame are plain, and you add what is yours: a station number, a surname, a year of service. On the blank cross the middle is about 28 mm across when the cross is 100 mm wide, enough for two or three numerals, and each arm has room for a short word set on a curve.
The cross outline is drawn to the same size as the solid cross. Cut the solid one in red and the outline in gold or white, and the outline sits on top as a border.
Sizes and materials
Helmets, the hydrant and the solid cross are heavy shapes that cut well down to 40 mm in vinyl. The axes have long handles about 6 mm wide at 100 mm, so in wood keep single axes above 100 mm and cut with the grain running along the handle. The hose is the slowest to weed, because the gap between its turns is one long spiral: start at the nozzle end and pull steadily towards the middle.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I add a station number to the helmet plate?
Yes, that is what the plate is for. It is a tall, narrow panel, so numerals fit better than a word. Set them in a bold face, cut them from a second colour and stick them on, or use the layered helmet, where the plate is its own gold piece.
Is the cross the same as a military or church Maltese cross?
No. The fire service cross has four broad arms with bowed ends and a round middle, which is the shape drawn here. The older eight-pointed Maltese cross has arms that end in a V. Firefighters use the name for their own shape, and so do the people who search for it.
Which design suits a gift for a retiring firefighter?
The badge with crossed axes or the monogram frame. Both leave an open middle for a number or initials, and both look right engraved on a board or cut in vinyl for a glass. Add the years of service underneath in your own lettering.
