A scene that holds together
A snow globe is a small scene floating in a ball of glass, and floating is the difficulty: anything not attached falls out when it is cut. In these files the glass is a ring about 3.6 mm wide at 100 mm, a drift of snow fills the bottom of it, and every tree, building and figure stands in the drift, so the whole globe lifts off the mat in one piece. The flakes are dots set on the inside of the ring, where they are joined to the glass.
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The finest parts are the bands cut into the base, about 1.6 mm wide, and the twig arms of the snowman, about 2 mm. Vinyl and card are fine at 80 mm; for plywood ornaments, cut at 120 mm or choose the globe with a snowflake, which has nothing thinner than 3 mm.
Shaker cards and personalised globes
The snow globe card front is a panel with a round window: stick clear acetate behind the window, add foam tape and sequins, and back it with a second panel for a shaker card. The empty snow globe has a plaque on its base and room in the glass for a name, a year or a small photo. The village at night is the reverse of the others, a solid globe with the houses and the snow cut out, made for dark vinyl on a pale mug or window.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make the snow look white?
Cut the globe from a dark colour and mount it on white card: the open glass shows white all round the scene. For a window cling, use white vinyl, so the drift, the tree and the flakes are the white parts and the glass is clear.
Can I put a name inside the empty snow globe?
Yes. Type the name, curve it a little if you like, and size it so that the first and last letters overlap the ring or the drift of snow, then weld. A short name can also go on the plaque in the base instead: slice it out of the plaque.
Which globes work as hanging ornaments?
The globe with a snowflake, the globe with a tree and the village at night are the sturdiest. Cut them from 3 mm wood or acrylic at 100 to 120 mm and drill or cut a 3 mm hole near the top of the glass ring for a ribbon.
