Clover the plant, not the emblem
The clover in a lawn does not have heart-shaped leaves. Each leaf is three rounded leaflets on a long thin stalk, and on white clover every leaflet has a pale V-shaped mark across its middle. These files draw that plant: egg-shaped leaflets with open gaps between them, the chevron cut out as two short slits, and stalks only about 3 mm wide at 100 mm. The flower is a round head of small pointed florets, with the oldest ones drooping at the bottom. For the bold St Patrick’s Day emblem with heart-shaped leaves, see the shamrock set.
About one clover leaf in several thousand has four leaflets, which is why finding one counts as luck. The patch of clovers hides a single four-leaf among the ordinary ones, and the charms all use the four-leaf form.
Cutting the stalks and chevrons
The thin stalks are the part to watch. In vinyl they are no trouble from about 60 mm. In card, cut the single leaves at 80 mm or more; in wood or acrylic choose the circle charm, the horseshoe or the monogram frame, where the clover is held by a ring and nothing hangs free. The chevron slits are 1.3 to 2.6 mm wide and stop short of the leaflet edge, so each leaflet stays whole.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What is the difference between this clover and a shamrock?
A shamrock is the emblem of Ireland, drawn with three heart-shaped leaves on a short stem. Clover here is drawn as the living plant, with rounded leaflets, a chevron on each, long thin stalks and flower heads. Use the shamrock for St Patrick’s Day and these for luck, gardens, bees and meadows.
Which clover makes a good key ring or pendant?
The four-leaf clover in a circle charm. The leaflets and the stalk all join the ring, and there is a loop at the top with a 6 mm hole when the file is 100 mm tall. At half size the hole is 3 mm, which still takes a jump ring.
What colour is a clover flower?
White clover has white heads that flush pink as they age, and red clover is a soft purplish pink. Cut the clover flower with two leaves twice, once in green and once in pink or cream, and keep the head from the second cut to lay over the first.
