Sizes, materials and what to watch when cutting an otter
An otter is a long tube of an animal with no thin legs or ears to worry about, so the plain shapes cut well at almost any size. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. On the otter silhouette the legs are about 5 mm wide and the tail tapers to a rounded point on the ground, so it can go down to about 40 mm for stickers and holds up in 3 mm plywood at 100 mm. The fine parts are the whiskers on the standing otter and the face: each is about 2 mm wide where it leaves the muzzle and thins to a point. Keep those designs at 80 mm or larger and weed away from the whisker tips.
The floating sea otter lies inside a ring of ripples about 4 mm wide. Its head and its tail cross the ring, which keeps the whole design in one piece and gives it a round shape for coasters and stickers.
River otters and sea otters
The otter on all fours, the otter standing up and the swimming otter are river otters: long, low and at home on a bank. The floating designs are sea otters, which rest on their backs, crack shells on their chests, carry their pups on their tummies and hold paws so that they do not drift apart while they sleep. The pair holding hands is the one to use for weddings, anniversaries and Valentine cards.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Do otters really hold hands?
Sea otters do. They sleep floating on their backs, and pairs or mothers and pups are often seen holding paws so that the current does not separate them. The otters in love design shows two from above, joined at the paws by a heart.
Which otter is easiest to cut?
The otter silhouette and the swimming otter. The silhouette has no inside cuts and the swimming otter has only an eye. Both have thick tails and no whiskers, so they are also the ones to choose for wood, acrylic and felt.
Can I add a name to an otter design?
Yes. Use the otter monogram frame: set an initial or a short name inside the ring so that the letters touch it, then weld them. The otter walks along the top of the ring, so the lettering has the whole circle to itself.
