What to make, and at what size

Most Christmas projects are small, which is where cut files go wrong. A tree ornament is about 75 to 90 mm (3 to 3.5 inches) across, a gift tag 50 to 75 mm, and a card front leaves room for a design about 100 mm wide. At those sizes thin parts become very thin, so check the table on each design’s page: it gives the narrowest part at seven sizes.

For 3 mm plywood or acrylic ornaments on a laser, choose designs whose narrowest part is 2 mm or more at the size you plan to cut. For vinyl on a mug or a bauble, anything 1 mm and wider weeds cleanly. For a shirt front, 9 to 11 inches wide suits an adult size and almost every design is safe.

Hanging holes, layers and sets

Ornament designs with a cap already have a loop or a hole for thread. For the others, add a 3 mm circle near the top in your cutting software. Several sets include an outline version of a solid design, made to be cut in a second colour and stacked, and the gift tag set includes sheets with four tags laid out to cut together.
