What makes it a poinsettia
The red parts of a poinsettia are not petals but bracts: coloured leaves, long and pointed, set in rings round a cluster of small yellow beads that are the real flowers. These files draw it that way. A ring of long bracts carries a ring of shorter ones over the gaps, each has a vein cut down its middle, and the centre is a ring of round holes.
On the single flowers, where the short bracts lie on the long ones, a fine line about 1.4 mm wide at 100 mm is cut round them so that the two rings read as separate layers. The line is broken at every notch, which is what holds the flower together. In vinyl, weed those lines with a pin before you lift the rest. The small flowers in the bunch, the pot and the frame leave the line out.
Paper, felt and layered poinsettias
For a flower with real depth use the paper poinsettia in four layers or the layered poinsettia in five colours. Cut the rings from red card at 150 mm or more across, score each bract lightly down its middle, pinch the fold, and stack the rings with each one turned to cover the gaps in the one below. Felt works too, without the scoring. The bracts end in fine points, so use a sharp blade and a sticky mat, and peel the mat away from the card rather than the card from the mat.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make a poinsettia in red and green from a one-piece file?
Use the poinsettia with leaves. Cut it once from red and once from green, then stick the red flower over the green copy so that only the three green leaves show. The layered poinsettia does the same job with separate files for each colour.
Can I cut the poinsettia in white or pink?
Yes. Real poinsettias come in white, cream, pink and marbled forms as well as red, and the shapes are the same. A white flower on kraft card, or a gold one on dark green, looks as much like Christmas as the red.
How small can a poinsettia be cut?
The poinsettia flower silhouette has no fine lines and works down to about 30 mm. The flowers with veins and a line between the rings need 80 mm or more, and the veined poinsettia is best at 120 mm and up.
